Ramesh Jain discusses the vision for future health at the February 9th IFH meeting.

IFH Meeting Explores Industry/Academic Partnerships to Realize Future Health

On Feb. 9, 2018, the Institute for Future Health hosted a lively discussion at UCI about the current state of healthcare, led by IFH Director and Bren Professor of Computer Science Ramesh Jain. Industry representatives and campus leaders met with Jain to explore how they can leverage research and technology to transform the current model of “sickcare” into actual healthcare.

“We’re adopting a new approach that will empower people… and start disrupting the healthcare industry,” said Jain, introducing the IFH goals to industry leaders from the following companies:

Jain went on to explain how UCI offers a neutral ground for defining and developing a platform that companies can use to build health applications. The proposed “health navigator” platform will convert continuously measured health data into actionable guidance for use in applications that aim to improve people’s health and quality of life.

The idea for IFH and the Personal Health Navigator (PHN) stemmed from a conversation over a year ago between Jain and Howard Federoff, a professor of neurology at UCI and past CEO of UC Irvine Health. Jain and Federoff realized there was an opportunity to build a unique institute that could bring together a variety of people – from medical practitioners and healthcare providers to researchers in fields such as biology and computer science – to collaborate and better apply technology advancements to medicine.

As Federoff noted during the meeting, “We all know that care is moving out of the hospital and into the community.” Companies must address this changing approach, so the question is, can the proposed platform, by providing access to high quality data and core technologies, motivate and accelerate the development and testing of new innovations? The attendees from industry seemed to think so.

The hope, explained Marios Papaefthymiou, dean of the Donald Bren School of ICS, is that “this will allow industry, at the end of the day, to bring new solutions.” UCI will provide the foundation by bringing together cutting-edge research and technologies from a variety of disciplines. “We’re here to explore a pre-competitive industry consortium around the Personal Health Navigator,” said Papaefthymiou.

The industry attendees learned about potential PHN health applications for diabetes and dementia and discussed how they might develop similar solutions. In particular, they considered the value proposition for shareholders, various business models and both short- and long-term goals. They also considered who else must be brought to the table to add, for example, the insurance provider and patient perspectives.

After a fruitful discussion, all participants agreed that there is great potential in realizing the IFH vision of future health. The next steps will be to define more concrete goals and to identify and secure the required resources.

The work has only just begun, but as Vice Chancellor for Research Pramod Khargonekar stated, “Nationally and globally, the time is right to take on this challenge.”
